Recent Advances in Gynecology

Track 4: Recent Advances in Gynecology

Risk of congenital anomalies following preconception bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery prior to pregnancy is associated with a reduced frequency of some obesity-related pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes, but concerns remain about possible risks to offspring. In a study of data from the Swedish Medical Birth Register comparing the risk of birth defects in offspring of nearly 3000 women who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) with that in matched controls managed medically, RYGB was associated with an approximately 30 percent reduction in congenital anomalies in subsequent pregnancies.
